I tested a lot of them and in my opinion the best for movies is VLCplayer and for music Clementine. Banshee is cool too.ericbsd wrote:http://www.ghostbsd.org/node/174

VLC?, no way! This isn't MS Windows. The best option for Microsoft should not be the best option for unix. Gnome-mplayer plays videos that VLC can't. Gnome-Mplayer makes more sense if you're with the Mate desktop. Let the power of unix be expressed in the special selection of apps. Any version of mplayer will play much better than VLC. However, it would be good to let Gnome-Mplayer be the default video player for GhostBSD, it is more in line with that refreshing experience.

Usually if I install them it would be (G)mplayer for movies & xmms/audacious for music, (I don't use tagging, I use directories).
Linux user since 1999; & now a BSD user.

SMPlayer would be nice. Best Mplayer frontend IMO.

I will say that I prefer MPlayer then VLC, I have made a pool in the past and VLC had come as the most popular.

In my experience (though on Linux) smplayer is faster and lighter on resources, but sometimes it can't play video files which vlc can. Also sometimes mplayer can play a file, but has problems moving around (skip forward/back), while vlc can. So I have both.

I am looking at MPV lately which is an interesting project, I am looking to build our own media player for GhostBSD in the future, but it is not to come soon. I need a base like Mplayer or MPV to achieve that, the thing is that it might became a front end for one of those 2 projects.

Hi, Eric,
These are unique and underated multimedia players, both based on Mplayer.
If you were to embark on your own project, among these would be a good start.
A unix version of XULPlayer or a GTk version of Umplayer.
Umplayer's downside is that it is Qt based. Gtk looks more mature and professional.
XULPlayer's downside is that it only supports MS Windows, but a very serious media player, not bad looking, too.
The ultimate media player in terms of looks is Kantaris, but that is another story.
They messed up using VLC as a backend instead of Mplayer or Xine.

VLC is popular because the majority is unaware of all the software that is out there.
Popularity doesn't breed excellence. Chosing special software is a special job.
