Cheese can't detect Webcam - There was an error playing video from the webcam

I installed cheese from the software station, but it gives a "There was an error playing video from the webcam" error on being started.
I am using a Logitech C910 webcam but when I open cheese's settings>Webcam>Devices, there is no webcam detected. On the other hand, if I start up skype online or zoom online from Firefox, both of these are able to detect the logitech webcam.
I've tried uninstalling cheese from software station and re-installing with pkg install cheese from the command line, both as user and as superuser, but neither work. I've typed in pw groupmod webcamd -m chaplintokyo as per the installation message from cheese-41.1_3.
Is there something further I can do to try to get cheese working on ghostBSD? Thanks for your help!
