It does not say: 'wrong password', it just prompts for password again.
If I try to switch user, same happens with login panel.
Only workaround: login as root via ssh as root and reboot.

Hint: Keyboard in use is German.
Solution: Add and select German keyboard layout in settings->devices.

With switch users, it is a known problem.

But with the mate lock screen login, it is new.
