Software Station stopped working

Hi,
My system was working fine, I downloaded and installed it a few days ago so it's mostly default.
Last night I tried installing Freeciv. It wasn't downloading. I wasn't sure which process to kill, so I tried the "Suspend" feature to deal with it later, and it did not suspend. It printed stuff on the screen like it was preparing for shutdown and hung up part way. I had to manually shut it down, couldn't change consoles (Ctrl+Alt+F keys not working, same with just Alt+F keys).
Since then, the system boots without the wifi USB key and I have to disable networking, enable it, and then pick my SSID from the list. In addition, the Software Station has stopped working. The global list says "Packages available: 0" and the Terminal icon reports Installed Packages: 562, but doesn't list them anymore. In both cases the lists are blank both the category and the packages list.
Is there a way to "reinstall" only the Software Station, or "reset" it in some way?
Thanks
GOM
