I'd recommend just using FreeBSD.
It is pretty simple to get XFCE up and running and you are completely patched and up to date. I run windowmaker personally on my laptop with FreeBSD 11 and it works great.
It is difficult for GhostBSD to keep a 32 bit functional with so little staff.

Re: Lenovo Legion Y520
I'm not sure.
However, if it has an Intel card as well and something isn't working, you might try disabling the Intel card in bios.
For whatever reason laptops are using dual video cards now and it is tougher to get working on non-Microsoft OSes.

Re: Redox OS and GhostBSD - fork
I just checked out an interview with the maker of Redox OS. Redox OS doesn't look very promising. It has gotten to the stage that tons of other hobby OS have gotten too. He gives a convincing sell to those that haven't programmed an OS before. His reasoning is extremely flawed and erroneous. There i...

Re: Redox OS and GhostBSD - fork
In case Eric doesn't clarify this is my understanding. TrueOS is basing stuff on current and going with QT apps for the desktop with their new Lumina desktop. Eric works for the company that is using/developing TrueOS. So he is going to take advantage of their work but use GTK stuff and use the Mate...

Re: Redox OS and GhostBSD - fork
Well the reason why Redox OS is fast is because it does nothing. It has no card specific video drivers. It doesn't support USB. When it becomes more functional it would probably be slower than FreeBSD as it has more to do based on the type of kernel. There is a reason every OS that is used is basica...

Re: Redox OS and GhostBSD - fork
That is a fairly aggressive request. Requesting a whole new operating system be built from scratch as a feature request. If RedoxOS is being built from scratch, what use would trying to force FreeBSD into the mix be? Wouldn't you just incorporate the features you want as you are building RedoxOS fro...

Re: Installation of VLC (VideoLAN) kills Gnome MPlayer & mor
I did read carefully, you apparently did not. For me I have VLC and MPlayer both installed and fully functional which apparently you do not. I am unable to test samba, but at least my VLC install doesn't kill mplayer. You can investigate the vlc-qt4 thing if you like. However, if your goal is VLC ov...

Re: Installation of VLC (VideoLAN) kills Gnome MPlayer & mor
Not sure if this helps. This distro has links to TrueOS and on TrueOS they were saying there are two version of vlc. The normal vlc version doesn't work well, but the vlc-qt version works better.
For me on FreeBSD 11 vlc and smplayer work with no issues on youtube videos. Full screen on both.

Re: Nextcloud on GhostBSD
Well I'm sure you can have the whole OS on ZFS as well with Mint: https://blog.heckel.xyz/2016/12/31/move-existing-linux-install-zfs-root/ I know with debian and Arch there are ways to install to ZFS from the start. I'd really recommend trying your solution on FreeBSD. Firefox 58 has zero issues on ...

Re: Nextcloud on GhostBSD
If your goal is having it run on a system with ZFS and it currently works on Mint, why not just install ZFS on mint?
