And change the default sound device by putting an entry in

/etc/sysctl.conf

You could try turning off your screensaver. It could be something to do with power management. Try turning off automatic screen blanking etc. I'm just guessing. Open your sound mixer and turn your mic down to zero and see if that helps. If you're using xfce GhostBSD you'll need to install the xfce4-mixer package to do this
